I get the impression that many of our local pilots are making use of the Solent 0011 squawk which indicates to the Southampton or Bournemouth radar controller that you are listening on their frequency without having made formal contact.
Farnborough LARS give a great service, but particularly at weekends it’s difficult to get a word in edgeways. So it’s good news that during their extra busy period they will have a listening squawk of 5047 between 2nd July and 15th August. But be clear, this does not obviate you from responsibility for remaining clear of the extensive and fairly complicated restricted airspace associated with the Farnborough Airshow and aforementioned Olympic Airspace. Don’t forget to revert to 7000 when you leave the frequency.
